Help Mr. Tan

Everyday teachers must compete with mass media, video games, music, and television to gain the attention and engagement of students. In this day and age, students are learning from competing stimuli at an alarming rate as they pick up styles, cultures, lingo, and habits from music videos like "My Humps" and video games like "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". The average student comes to school with the expectation that they must learn content standards in a very one dimensional way (lectures, paper, and pencil). This proposal is designed to not only bridge the media influence with grade level appropriate California State learning standards, but to foster skills to deconstruct the messages coming from the multi media and create a counter narrative. As a 5th grade teacher at a South Los Angeles elementary school, resources are hard to come by. Teachers fight for the simple resources like paper and paper towels, much less simpler technology like the copiers. There is a lot of emphasis with mandated scripted Math and Language Arts curriculum that it is up to the creativity and resourcefulness of the teacher to broaden the scope of the students learning experience to include arts, science, and technology. Yet in this ever changing society, the demand for technological competencies is becoming a must for students. I was shocked when my students had little to no experience with an outdated computer to the point where some didn't even have a clue as to how the computer was turned on. Blending the issues aforementioned, the project can address multiple problems for over 35 5th grade students at a crucial time of their academic careers (the level just before they enter middle school). Using a video camera (mini DV), a laptop with DVD burning capabilities, an external hardrive, and some video editing software, students will be asked to create an ethnography of their family's lived experiences. This project will take on the 5th grade Language Arts program thematic unit of "Heritage" and will ask the students to create interview questions, write ups and transcriptions, reflections, and connections to other families and global issues. To lead up to the production of their culminating task, the students will learn about critical media literacy skills, critical thinking and problem solving through media, general computer skills, video editing, interviewing and presentation skills, as well as writing. This project may be an extensive and bold proposal, but the students are very eager and capable. 35+ students will not only benefit from the experience, but they will have the opportunity to learn in extremely meaningful and real life contexts. Through this project, 5th grade students will not only engage in media, they will be transformed from mere consumers of multimedia (oftentimes blindly soaking things in) to becoming producers of multimedia in meaningful ways. Their final videos will be showcased to the community and in other venues.
