My Students

I teach high school band in a small town outside of Houston TX. Between class time, rehearsals, football games and band contests, my students put in 26-30 hours each week during the marching season (on top of their other classes and homework). They are some of the most dedicated students that you will ever find.

These kids come from many different backgrounds, and have a wide variety of aspirations for themselves when they leave high school.

However, for those 26-30 hours each week, all of the kids lock into each other and the goals for the group.

My Project

Have you ever tried to teach 14-18 year old students how to move their bodies in new, very specific ways? How about trying to explain how their feet, knees, hips, abs, rib cage, shoulders and head should look at any given moment? And the most difficult of all...how would you explain to a student what his or her sound looks like?

Students are responding more and more to visual learning through technology as opposed to strictly verbal communication.

With the help of third party apps, this iPad will allow students to see what correct marching technique looks like and through video analysis compare it to their own bodies. This teaching technique is very similar to analyzing a person's golf swing. Many times people don't realize they are doing something wrong until they actually see it. This teaching strategy will also be used with the students' music performance. Recording apps will allow students to actually see what their sound looks like when it starts, sustains and then ends.

When Hurricane Harvey hit our community, we were out of school for nearly two weeks. Missing that much instruction time reminded our class that the efficiency of instruction time is crucial to student achievement. This donation will allow the opportunity for students to use technology in a new and exciting way that will significantly raise their level of awareness and achievement.
