Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I work at a Title I school, which means my students come from low income/disadvantaged homes. This year my class has 17 out of 24 who are classified as LEP (limited English proficient). Our school also has a high number of refugees. Out of my 24, 5 in my class are refugees.
These students receive free lunches and many receive free clothes from school as well.
Although these students come from low-income households, they are not any less deserving of a wonderful classroom experience. I create a positive classroom environment where students feel comfortable to learn and are set up for success for years to come.
My Project
My students need a working pencil sharpener so that they don't have to sharpen pencils by hand. Right now I have to send my pencils down to the parent room and wait a few days to get them back, which causes the students to sharpen by hand in the meantime. This is not effective and is a distraction to students. Sharp pencils and an electric pencil sharpener are necessities for a classroom of 24 students.
My students need reading comprehension questions so that they can dive deeper into a story during stations.
These reading questions will keep them on task and hold them accountable for their reading while I am with another group during stations. I would also like to use these during read-a-louds.
My students also greatly benefit from incentives from the treasure box. During the week I give my students goals, and those who meet those goals at the end of the week receive a prize from the treasure box. Examples of goals may include completing the daily homework, having good behavior, or going above and beyond in the classroom. They look forward to these prizes as positive reinforcement that they are being a good classroom citizen.
