Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low-income neighborhood with limited resources. They often have varied sensory, emotional & learning difficulties. Some of my students and families are not technologically savvy and are still learning how to speak, read and/or write in English. They have limited room to study & poor wi-fi connections making the disconnect between us even bigger. Face to face interactions are on pause and we are now connected via just a screen.

Due to COVID-19, my students are at home, ALL day, every day until school re-opens; which is currently unknown.

I can't even imagine the range of feelings they must be experiencing. I have never done teletherapy before but am doing my best to adapt; because it is essential for my kids to have some sort of continuity & comfort during this pandemic. However, in order to do well, they must see what is required & expected. Having a document camera will make this transition to distance learning much easier for all of us. It will be a game-changer!

My Project

Students with speech/language disabilities learn best with visual aides. They need a "gradual release" approach to understanding information; in which I do a task first, then we do it together, and finally it's on their own. I have been recording videos on my phone to explain a lesson, which is a great start because they can at least have something to see with an assignment. But this is far from natural or what they are used to, my videos are also viewed at a later time so it's difficult to determine if they truly understand what is being presented. A document camera will help me project what we are doing onto the screen in REAL TIME during a tele-therapy session. It will allow me to make more creative videos, show my supplies, & share my materials from my home to theirs.
