My Students

Writing and presenting is something we do all the time. My students love to write, they love to learn and share in small groups, but my biggest challenge is encouraging my not so confident or shy students to be a part of this awesome celebration and share their great work with the whole class!

My school is a Title One school with an amazing program called the Nest Program.

We integrate students on the autism spectrum into the general ed class. There are about 4 ASD students and 15-20 typical students. My autistic students are the most lovable, sweet, and brightest children. They are such hard workers just like the typical students in my class. They strive to fit in and be like their typical peers. The great thing is that all the students help each other. The typical students are great role models socially for their ASD peers. (They don't even know it, but they are!) As teachers, we encourage all our students, regardless of their struggles, to help one another in all ways whether it is social or academic. My classroom is a caring, loving, nurturing environment in which ALL kids needs are addressed. One can walk into my classroom and be astonished at the team work and collaboration that takes place among my students. My school has Nest classes from Intensive K-5th grade.

My Project

I am requesting materials that will help my ASD students be successful. One of the challenges that several of my students encounter is their lack of confidence. So often my students don't want to read aloud their published piece so we have a student volunteer read it for them. We want to hear their voice! If I had a recordable microphone, my student can record their writing and play it back during a celebration! They can record it in private and this would alleviate the stress of presenting in front of everyone. This is differentiation! On the other hand, we have students that do present, but do not project their voices! If I had a microphone for those children, then everyone can hear them, all the students would be engaged, and their peers can give feedback because they were able to hear them! It's wonderful to hear them compliment each other. Their faces shine! Of course, a flash drive would allow students to work on their drafts from school to home. Not all students can afford them

These items would make a world of difference to my students.

They would be able to be a part of our writing celebration. They would be meeting the 3rd grade common core standards for writing, listening, and speaking. But the best part is they would feel accomplished and successful. This is a big deal to students that face obstacles every single day. It's so important that they realize they can reach their potentials and be successful. Your help would be so greatly appreciated!
