Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Writing is not easy for me. I wish I could write better!" This is a statement I often hear from my students and one I am constantly working on to remove from their vocabulary. This year, I am the writing specialists at my school. One of my responsibilities is to teach writing to elementary school students in a high needs school just north of Atlanta.

For young students, specially second language learners, writing is a difficult task. To help my students start thinking like readers and writers, I heavily rely on the use of mentor texts to introduce new and ongoing concepts to my students. I use mentor texts as a foundation from which students learn the art of writing.

With more advanced students, a mentor text teaches an endless amount of lessons. These lessons include, but are not limited to the writer’s craft, structure, symbolism, theme, imagery, and tone to help the students become better readers and writers. Frequent reading of a mentor text results in an increasingly intimate familiarity with the work. The reader is better able to understand how the text works and, in an effort to imitate it, will learn how to produce similar effects as a writer, consequently learning how to write by actually writing. A mentor text worthy of study tends to contain some characteristic of writing considered to be of excellent quality. For young writers, a worthy mentor text could be one that the writer connects with and sees as an example of quality to imitate. With young students, picture books can be effective early mentor texts because of the number of times they can be reread in a given school year.

Using a mentor text teaches students to read with a writer's eye, noticing how a writer uses elements as sentence structure and word choice to create meaning. In imitating the mentor text, students begin to write in ways that are outside their comfort zone in their normal writing and therefore learn new ways of expressing what they want to express. With your help and generous donations, you can help all my students extend their writing skills far beyond grammar and punctuation. You can help them stretch their minds and sharpen their skills as young writers.
