My Students

We are the little engine that could. Our high school is an urban high-needs small school currently located within an existing, under-performing school. We have made great gains in our fourth year and will be expanding to a 6-12 school because of our success.

Our students are inquisitive learners who are trying to balance the everyday pressures from their home lives with the academic need to succeed and go to college.

Our school is a college-preparatory school which seeks to equip them to be the future leaders of our world. We are convinced that living in an urban environment should not disenfranchise you from the "creature" comforts of schools in more affluent neighborhoods. To that end, we have equipped our schools with the best that we can afford - interactive whiteboards and laptops. But we are also dealing with the limitations of severe budget cuts. We truly want to cultivate the 21st century learner, so we have invested a lot in technology, but we still have a ways to ramp up our 100+ year old building from the older days of education to the new. Bring on the whiteboards!

My Project

Our classroom is very vintage and unique, but not practical for today's learner. On the wooden floor, you can still see the marks where old desks used to be bolted to the floor. Currently, chalkboards line the walls, but they are turning a slight grayish color from years of use, and students complain that they are unable to see what I write on the board. I would like to have two whiteboards and markers so that students can see clearly when I'm trying to illustrate a concept, and also give them the opportunity to come up to the board and write things that the other students can see and use as a learning example.

Students will notice the boards from day one, and I'm sure that they will appreciate the visual clarity and the ability to see what I'm talking about! Thank you for your support!
