My Students

I Can Read! Is a statement that I love to hear from my kindergarten students. They are learning to recognize that letters make sounds and form words. They are beginning to read any word that may be in front of them, but are still not confident enough to pick up books to read in full length.

I have a diverse group of students but one thing they have in common is the love of good books.

Story time has got to be the favorite time of the day and library day, their favorite day. I think they love it because our classroom itself does not have many books to choose from that they have interest in reading. When they go to the library, they choose Dr. Seuss books among other favorites to bring back to our room. I would love to provide them with a permanent library with the books that they love. I also want to encourage them to use the sight words and decoding skills that we have been learning to read the stories to themselves, their partners or their families.

My Project

I've chosen 25 "I Can Read" books. Many of them are the Dr. Seuss and PD Eastman favorites that we remember as children. I've also chosen a few new classics that are sure to spark imagination and a giggle or two. A few of the books in the collection also come with a CD so that I can use the book in a listening center for the students who are not yet able to read on their own. These books will be available for independent reading, read-alouds, pair-share reading, and even for take-home for families to share.

Your support of this project is important to my class because early readers need as many confidence boosters as they can have.

Knowing that someone out there wants to gift us books that we can read over and over again will make our kindergarten class feel motivated to delve into reading this collection from cover to cover. Having access to such books in the classroom and for take home may be just the inspiration they need to become proficient and confident readers before the first grade.
