Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school and of my 23 current kindergarten students, 18 receive free or reduced rate lunch, that is 78% of my class! I have students whose parents are front line workers. These parents are busy trying to homeschool their children, make meals, house clean and tend to their families. They are also asked to keep up with the daily lesson plan that is assigned each day. These parents work hard but often do not have extra money to buy books for their child. Kindergarten children enjoy reading. They enjoy books that are engaging and at their level.

I have reading groups twice a week and not all the students are able to make it because they do not have access.

As a Kindergarten student, a parent normally needs to help the child log in to Zoom to participate in the reading group and usually stay with the child for 30 - 45 minutes while I teach reading . Half my class can't join because the parent is not home to help their child log into Zoom. Often the babysitter is not computer literate and do not know or feel comfortable to help the child

My Project

The books I have chosen are from Jan Thomas. These books are engaging and similar to books written by Mo Willems. Both involve animated animals having a conversation and an adventure. My students find this engaging.

The stories are written for beginner readers and contain many high frequency words the students learn throughout the year.

Most will be able to read the book without much parent help. The students are excited as they flip through the pages and recognize words they have been working on. It helps raise the students' self esteem because the student can read the book!

The students in my class enjoy owning a book that they can read and of one that I have read in class several times.
