Do you remember having a huge list of materials to get when school started? Well, most of my students, if not all, cannot afford any materials. Therefore they need basic supplies for my Spanish class in order to practice reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. This will also keep them organized.
My students attend an elementary school in Philadelphia, PA.
We are a very structured school, but are unfortunately located in a low-income area, and are known for being in one of the most dangerous parts of the city. Our school was even donned the nickname "Deadly Smedley," before Mastery took over. Even with those surroundings, our students still come to school every day with smiles on their faces because they know that they are one step closer to going to college. Many of our students have lost parents and siblings due to the crime in the neighborhood, and many have witnessed those happenings themselves. This does not hold our students down. They are always striving to be on the next reading level, or to get a 100% on their Benchmarks. Having Spanish allows our students to "leave" their daily life, and travel to different Spanish-speaking countries to immerse themselves in the language and culture of the people who live in those countries.
I have requested basic supplies of composition notebooks and folders for my Spanish classes. I teach all grades K-6, and I have 5 classes at one time. The problem is that I switch classes, and receive a new set of 5 classes every 12 weeks. Therefore, I have to try and provide 150 notebooks and 150 folders every 12 weeks for my students, which can get extremely expensive. Just having a simple notebook and folder will allow the students to know they have something of their own to pracitce their reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish. I plan to teach them proper Spanish grammar and vocabulary which will help them write sentences. Once they have mastered this, the students will be able to write short stories, write about experiences, and fantacize they travelled to a Spanish-speaking country and write about what they did on their trips in Spanish. Using these basic school supplies, my students will be able to stay orgnaized, which will help them become fluent in another language
Donations to this request will make a difference in that our students will know not only their teachers want them to succeed in school and in life, but that people whom they have never met also care about their present life and their future.
The impact it will have on my students is that they will be able to immerse themselves in the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking countries. They will also learn a skill for everyday life, and they can achieve the goals and careers they want.
