Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are taught to have grit! They come from immigrant families where 98% are low-income and live in high-risk communities. Our students go home after school and have to be parents to younger siblings because their parents work multiple jobs. Still our students persevere and test scores continue to sore. Our school is an AVID Demonstration school. This shows that despite the struggles, they believe in themselves and are on a path to college. They continue to work hard, overcome obstacles such as language, hunger, and gangs to succeed. Music for our students has become a big part of their connection to school. They voluntarily spend time in the music room practicing during lunches and after school. They do this even though they struggle with having all the things they need to be successful in music. They show true grit.

My Project

My students struggle on a regular basis to supply themselves with items like books, paper, pencils, and lunch. Receiving these supplies for their instruments will lighten the burden on both our students and the community. This past school year, students struggled to thrive on the their instrument. When students can't thrive then they don't enjoy the music they create. When they don't enjoy the music they don't thrive. When students don't thrive, they don't learn. The reeds and tuners will allow students to play with wonderful tones, and pitches to be successful at district festivals and performances this school year.
