My Students

What would it be like if you were not able to listen to a story on cd? To hear a real voice reading with passion and excitement is engaging for my students. My students would love an opportunity to listen to books on cd with headphones that would allow them to sit anywhere in the classroom.

Every morning, I say, "You are the smartest kindergartners in the whole city!" I want to show my students that they deserve to have the same resources as their peers in other areas of the city.

I have 28 students in kindergarten. We are in a mid size elementary school located in Illinois. My students live in and around the neighborhood of our school. Our school is 98% African-American 1% Latino-American and 1% white. 98% of all our students receive free or reduced priced meals. My class is 99% African-American and 1% Puerto Rican-American. We are in a charter school in the inner-city.

My Project

Imagine wanting to listen to a book on CD, your excited because it looks really interesting. Your teacher says, 15 minutes enjoy! You pull your headphones out of the box they are in, and notice they are tangled. After 10 minutes of trying to untangle the cords your time is up! This is something my students are faced with everyday. My students are so frustrated with the cords on the headphones; that they chose to NOT use this activity. My students need an opportunity to hear fluent reading multiple times a day. The cordless headphones will allow my students to enjoy books on CD without the frustration of tangled cords. Fluency is a skill that has to be developed in Kindergarten and the best way to build this skill is through listening to books on CD. These headphones will open the door to fluency and love for reading.

This project will ensure my students are competing with their peers.

My students would love to listen to classic books on CD and the cordless headphones will ensure that nothing stands in their way to great books.
