Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching in a low-income inner city community for the past 15 years has been an amazing experience. My students are 3rd and 4th graders and have various degrees of special needs. They are sweet, eager to learn and have a great spirit that keeps me on my toes. Teaching a special education self-contained classroom is challenging and exciting at the same time.

Seeing the 'lightbulb' go off when it just clicks is extremely rewarding and they are so proud​ of themselves that they 'GOT IT!'.

Knowing they do not get a lot at home and are often responsible for helping with so many chores after school, makes me want to support them so much more at school. I want my students to know that it's ok to need help and to ask for it. That's how we can grow and learn so much more.

My Project

My students would greatly benefit from having an area in the classroom that they can go to to calm down, destress, regroup and reset. Having an place that has carpet and a bean bag chair will provide them with a comfy place to sit. Coloring on the big poster (group effort throughout the year) using pencils that never have to be sharpened or flipping sequins can be very relaxing.

The students in my class are great kids and just need to be shown how to handle their emotions so they can be their best self.

Also, diffusing essential oils can be very beneficial from providing focus, uplifting, or calming to killing the germs in the air so everyone stays healthy all year.
