My Students

I teach seventh grade English language arts at a Title One school in the neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. Most of my students are English language learners and are eager to improve their reading and writing skills. Many do not have access to books outside of school.

My students are eager to learn, and they inspire me every day with their enthusiasm.

They often come into school dealing with challenging situations at home (many of them face challenges of poverty, inadequate housing, violence and fractured families). Despite their challenges, however, they work hard in school and dedicate themselves to their studies. For the majority of my students, English is not their first language, but they work hard to build up their reading and writing skills in English. They are always looking for new books that will help them improve but will also transport them to different worlds and introduce them to new experiences. They also like reading about characters with whom they can connect.

My Project

Last year I began a voluntary Book Club during lunch, and I was amazed at the number of students who were thrilled to spend their lunch period eating and reading with me. This year my students have asked for Book Club again. I have a group of students who have chosen to participate, and they would like to read the book "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban." They are interested in reading the inspiring true story of a girl their own age, told in her own words. We will use these books during Book Club to read together and discuss Malala's story, and the students will guide the discussions as they make connections to their own lives as well as what they are learning in school.

This project will foster my students' love of reading.

It will expose them to a world that is unfamiliar to them, but will hopefully strike a chord within them and inspire them to take charge of their own learning and fight for what they believe in just as Malala has done. Through reading this book, the students will improve their English reading and writing skills and will open their minds. I am eager to read with them and learn with and from them as we explore this memoir together.
