My Project

You may find it unsurprising that research has reported that in recent years, many students have developed math anxiety or math phobia. Ever since the pandemic, students have been faced with a wide range of hardships, and even upon returning in person, these effects still ripple and are prevalent. The school I teach at is socially and economically disadvantaged, so students have been hit especially hard by external factors, but what stands out to me is their incredible work ethic, creativity, and willingness to use their education to change society.

Interactive Notebooks, Binders, and Journals are the focus of my project, materials that mirror my philosophy as an educator: 1) to develop strong math scholars who see themselves as "math people" and 2) to develop self-aware individuals who can see the humanity in themselves and in others to impact the world toward kindness.

My goals for my students this year are to stay organized, work diligently, ask challenging questions, grow in their understanding of math (AP Calculus or Geometry), and delve deeper into their identities. I want each of my students to recognize their capabilities as scholars and to believe that the knowledge they learn in my class is valuable in making the world a better place.

Notebooks will be used by each student to take notes, glue in handouts that we go over in class, and keep topics organized. My AP Calculus students will use the Binders to organize their homework assignments and study guides. Journals will be used for students to journal daily about prompts such as "How are you feeling?". Taking time to pause and assess well-being is crucial for everyone, but especially for high school students who are inundated with so much.
