This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from low-income households and many even below poverty line. I want to be able to provide a place where they feel comfortable and safe and be someone that can positively influence their lives.

Many of my students come from broken homes, shelters, and even homelessness.

Most of my students have limited to no access to computers or internet outside of our school building. Many students view the school as a way to escape their unfortunate lifestyles. With the budget cuts, it has made it difficult to fund student centered projects.

My Project

This project is heartbreaking. It positively destroys me to be creating this project. My school is designated as "high poverty" but, I'm pretty sure if you're reading this, you don't really know what that means. Since I’ve been at this school, I've seen students come to class in the same dirty clothes day after day. I've seen students who felt embarrassed because they knew they smelled bad but couldn't do anything about it. Many of my students live in shelters. I've had parents call me and tell me that they weren't able to send their child to school because of no running water and didn't want their classmates to make fun of their child's odor. It hurts to see my student’s being made fun of in class because of their hygiene.

To say my students are disadvantaged is a horrible understatement.

My heart breaks daily because some of the kids I count as my own come to school every day because they know they can count on getting two meals here. Some of them even come from group homes because their parents have disappeared and/or given up on them. This project will provide the students of my school with the basic life essentials that you and I take for granted. I'm asking for hygiene products they can use at the school. I want to create hygiene bags with all the essentials needed to have a clean body. They do not have much when they leave this school but I want to make it so that when they are in here they don’t have to worry about food or cleanliness as this is something we can help them with.
