My Project

My school is an alternative transfer school. To me this means my instruction can't be conventional. Therefore, I have always aimed to provide different experiences for my students. Teaching science through hydroponics allows students to learn key science skills and knowledge while also growing crops from seed to harvest.

This is my third-year teaching hydroponics, and I want students in year three to have another skillset added to their classroom experience.

Once we harvest, I usually prepare meals, do the pickling, or make the teas. Although I have had students participate as much as possible in our harvest products, lack of resources and materials has limited their involvement. If we receive the hydrator, it provides an additional option for our herbs. We can more efficiently make teas and dried spices rather than put them in paper bags to dry. This also increases the likelihood of students taking harvested crops home since it will be nonperishable and usable. This will also aid in the making of our lip balm which is infused with dried herbs.

Lastly, instead of me chopping and preparing our harvested crops I want the students to assist in the process and learn a culinary skill as well. The class cutlery set will allow students to be active participants rather than spectators in the process. This will make the class much richer and a step closer to a true farm to table experience.
