Our school is located in a small rural school district in southwest Ohio. We are housed in a building that is almost 100 years old. Some of my students are learning in the same classrooms that their parents and grandparents did, which is part of what makes our school a comfortable place for families to gather.
I am grateful to teach an active and enthusiastic group of junior high students, who are happy to come to school and eager to use STEM in high-interest problem-solving.
I am also the STEM advisor, and I am always looking for new ways to engage my students in STEM principles both in and out of the classroom for creativity and innovative thinking.
My Project
We were inspired by the environmental project titled "Budding Ecologists Need a Drone and Hydroponics System". We have been studying local seeds, soil, and growing systems and would love to mimic this project as we study the ecology around our schoolyard.
My students are studying various methods to grow and harvest seeds as we dream about terraforming Mars.
This project would expand our current work with our indoor greenhouse by gaining a hydroponics system to compare growth in both soil and water. We would use the mini drone to examine the local farmland and flora and fauna in and around our school as we study biomes. We would use the following videos as springboard activities: Mission Unstoppable: What’s Special About Soil? and Mission Unstoppable: How Is the Environment Affecting Our Health?
