Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher in a Title l public school in Harlem. There is one general education class and there are two special education classes per grade, and many of our students are second language learners.

I have been teaching at my school for 19 years.

Four years ago I became the science teacher.

Over the past four years, more and more of the students are wanting to spend time in the science room, borrowing books and/or wanting to learn more about the materials in the classroom.

My Project

In my science classroom we have a hydroponic tower growing 28 leafy vegetables and herbs and two smaller Aerogardens growing herbs and flowers.

I want to continue with the hydroponic tower and Aerogardens but I can't afford the upkeep of what we are currently doing or continue to introduce further experiences.

Each year I have between 5 and 10 committed students from the 4th and 5th grades to help after school doing everything that needs to be done to keep everything living and growing. They call themselves "The Hydro Team".

While it is a small group that works with me, all of the classes in the school (Prek-3 to 5th grade) get to share in the experience. Whenever we finish the required lesson with time to spare, the students know that they now have time to ask about anything in the classroom, and it's usually about the hydroponic tower!

In addition, the students eat what we grow. The children love the lettuce and rainbow chard, but are split on the arugula (the variety we are currently growing is quite spicy). The herbs are offered to the families for cooking.

I am asking for materials to replace what always needs to be replaced over time, such as grow lights and filters for the air purifier. I'm also asking for materials to further the experience for the students with broad spectrum grow lights (to grow flowers and flowering vegetables) and a microscope! Lastly, I am also asking for materials to help us with the all important job of cleaning up the messes that inevitably happen when we do what needs to be done for the hydroponic tower and Areogardens.
