This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project will provide an interactive hands-on experience for my students to explore the world of hydroponics. My students will use the steps of the experimental design process to design an experiment (grounded in research on sustainable gardening practices) that tests the impact that the hydroponics food-growing method has on the environment. They will then communicate their findings in a photo essay they present to a local gardening group.

All of my students come from urban environments in NYC and many of them have never had the experience of growing a plant.

It is an amazing thing to watch the joy and excitement on my students' faces day after day when we grow plants in our classroom, but It is a struggle every year to sustain slow-growing soil-grown plants in the classroom. The technology of hydroponics can take this experience to the next level for my students this year, and for years to come.
