My Students

"Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA) welcomes students of all backgrounds and abilities to train alongside their volunteer mentors to complete the Los Angeles Marathon. Through this life-changing experience, students discover their best selves and learn how to make plans for the future."

Here at my school, we are proud to operate one of the largest SRLA teams in the organization.

Despite the high quality programming and expectations we have for our students, we are still a 100% Title 1 school, where all kids receive free or reduced priced meals. Our ethnic population is approximately 92% Hispanic or Latino, about 17% are English Language Learners (ELLs), and 16% receive Special Education services.

To make the journey to the LA marathon possible, SRLA, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, provides students with training shirts, running shoes, entry fees and transportation to the races, a Marathon uniform, and Marathon Day support FREE OF CHARGE to students. Despite this enormous support, our runners still need more to make sure they have the best chance at success as they train.

My Project

SRLA is an amazing organization that provides the students with so much, however it is still up to the individual teams and families to supplement for our runner's needs. The El Sereno MS SRLA team does long runs through our community every weekend leading up to the marathon and there aren't any official water stations along our routes! We are so fortunate to have parent volunteers who set up a half-way point where our kids can fuel up, but already our weekend runs measure over 12 miles!

Water belts are crucial to keeping young bodies healthy as they tackle long distances.

We can even keep little snacks in the front zipper pocket to sustain them until we get to the rest station.

Speaking of those rest stations, we need a place to put all the gatorade, pretzels, bananas, and sun-block that our parents bring for our students athletes. Just picture our row of happy, hydrated runners pulling up to the table under the ESMS purple canopy to refuel. Can you see the peppy parent volunteers packing it all back up in that nifty little wagon once we take off again? And if it's raining, our runners AND parents will be dry.
