My Students

I teach in an urban setting on the south side of Chicago. My students come to class each day ready to learn in an engaging and safe space. Each day, my students receive instruction in reading, math, writing, social studies and science in a variety of styles so each student's learning needs are met.

With 30 students, it is often difficult to ensure that each student has supplies that allow and enhance learning.

Given our world's current circumstances, many of these items will be used to keep my students healthy and safe!

My school is nestled in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. An area that once had a booming economy has fallen to poverty and acts of violence. Despite this, all of my students come to class each day with a smile on their face and are eager to take on the day together. They are not only an inspiration to each other, but to me!

My Project

The funding of this project would make a world of a difference for my students and my classroom. At this point in time, my school district plans to follow a hybrid learning plan. With that being said, there is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to actual instruction and how that will look. One thing I know for sure is that the sharing of supplies will no longer be acceptable.

The file folder labels, I requested in my project will allow me to label the dry erase markers that were requested in my project as well as the personal erasers with a name tag so students know which items belong to them.

The hand sanitizer, cleaning spray and paper towels will allow for a cleanly environment. I have also requested face masks in case one of my students is unable to afford one. There are several welcome signs and inspirational posters I've requested in order to keep my students in a positive frame of mind whether at home or remote. Another essential item in my cart is ear buds. By receiving a classroom set of earbuds, students will be able to individually utilize the same pair throughout the whole year. Students need headphones to hear directions on their computer learning platforms and to listen to stories or skip-count sequences. Other essential items in my cart are 'play' money and place value blocks, two vital learning points students are taught in second grade. As I am not requesting personal sets, the antibacterial spray and paper towels will allow me to sanitize the manipulatives after each student use as well as the classroom in general.
