Hurricane Winds beneath Our Wings

My students need jump ropes, basketballs and volleyballs to stay physically fit, healthy and motivated to learn. After Hurricane Irma, the students had to regroup and reboot. The physical education equipment will get our students moving again!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in the southern portion of Florida, only miles from the lush saw-grass of the Everglades. Typically, students spend their day studying animal science, as they are considered teen zoologist. Additionally, they are stellar academics, taking such advanced courses as Algebra and Geometry.

It's not uncommon for parents to hear at the dinner table, "we fed the giraffes and observed their interaction with other mates today." This is what our students live for.

Spending time on the sea side studying marine life or at the zoo studying the eating habits of nocturnal animals, or travelling to the Washington National Zoo, or simply dissecting a star fish. The list of of engaging classroom research goes on.

Our school's cultural landscape is 47% Hispanic, 46% African-American and 7% White, Asian or mixed. Our school system offers free breakfast daily. We have determined that 88% of our students qualify for Free Lunch and 3% qualify for reduced lunch.

We love the look in the eyes of our students when discovery and exposure has just hit them. Our job is to keep our students engaged, healthy, fit, motivated and

My Project

We are Raider Strong! The physical education instructor has built a program to match any stellar athletic program in the state. Throughout the year, there are over 15 after school competitive athletic teams offered to our boys and girls. This includes cross country, track & field, volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, bowling, swimming, flag football, to start. The physical education coach has a regular teaching load with over 300 students on her roster. Our students need jump ropes, basketballs and volleyballs to learn coaching skills, assisting, endurance, counting, averaging. Just these few items will help our students improve their math and reading scores, all while learning to assist each other! Students encourage one another in new skills, like dribbling a basketball with the left hand, and then the right. In volleyball, our students will learn to jump and assist. Jump ropes will help with counting, increasing muscle strength, and can be taken anywhere.

Hurricane Irma made her path through the very community of which our school sits and left our students out of school for a few weeks.

With no electricity and food in short supply, students needed normalcy. When the school district reopened schools, that did not mean everyone. Our students were housed at the nearby high school due to severe water damage, mold and mildew that consumed our building as a result of the hurricane. Teachers designed lessons to keep students engaged and prepared them for upcoming topic tests.

The physical education instructor stepped in, with just a few balls and created movement and team building games and exercises to develop new skills like leadership, community, school spirit and most importantly, smiles.

With the start of a busy athletic season, our physical education department will meet the challenges of creating winners and life coaches.
