Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, you get a variety of students from sixth to eighth grade pouring in, wanting to do one thing, "play a sport". Our goal is to have our students fall in love with a sport and keep them engaged throughout the delicate middle school years. Our biggest challenge is we don't have usable equipment for the many different sports teams.

The lack of adequate equipment has not stopped our students from going above and beyond in each sport.

Our volleyball team made it to semi-finals and several athletes from our tennis team and golf team went to county competitions, our basketball team made it all the way to play-ins.

My Project

Hurricane Irma created havoc in our city and at our school. Being out of school for almost 2 weeks was difficult for our students, families, and staff. The fact that our school was a shelter during the storm helped prove what an amazing community and student body we have.

Irma left us with no power, many downed trees and a lot of work to be done.

Little by little students and staff began to show up and within days our school was cleared and prepared to receive our almost 2,000 student body back.

Our students have proven that what counts in desperate times is love, kindness, and compassion. As many volunteered in the shelter as they fled their homes for safety, they also helped serving, food, picking up trash, entertaining the young children and translating for the many elderly in the shelter.

With our new equipment, there will be no limits or boundaries that our students wouldn't be able to achieve. The volleyball net will replace the one being held up by tape. The volleyballs, basketballs, footballs and soccer balls will replace the beaten up almost flat balls. The basketball nets will fill our rims which are currently bare. The flag football equipment will be used by hundreds of students in physical education. I have wonderful athletes whom just cannot afford the equipment needed and now they too will be able to play.
