Hurricane Sandy - We Need Portable Heaters

My students need four portable heaters. Our school currently has no power and heat. Asking students to dress warm is not enough. I hope I can get some heaters for my class.

My Students

My students live in a community that has been under a state of an emergency since the storm. I have been organizing coat drives, collecting school supplies, and distributing food to families as a result of the curfew. My students need additional materials such as heaters to heat classrooms.

The majority of my students have free or reduced lunch with parents that earn an income near the poverty line.

Despite their social economical status, my students are filled with hope and potential to be excellent students. I love the way they support each other and show compassion for one another. My school is on a path of going from a progress report grade of "F" to a "A" in two years. The school was graded a "C" school with progress in test scores, school culture, and organization.

My Project

I am requesting portable heaters because the students really need to feel comfortable until the school repairs components necessary to get heat in the school. The material will make it possible for me to use my classroom and share with the technology teacher as we attempt to get students caught up with on-line assignments the Department of Education assigned due to the curfew and state of emergency designated to our area.

Attendance is an essential element of students success.

The material will help make education the great equalizer for many of our students during this challenging time. Students will be more excited about school knowing there will be heat in the classrooms. The impact of seeing their teachers reaching out to the community and making an attempt to provide necessary supplies they need to be successful students will be felt for the rest of their lives.
