My Students

How often have we taken for granted the simple things in life like "my lights will turn on if I flip this switch," or "of course there is school tomorrow," or "this storm is a little scary but everything will be okay when it is over"? My students no longer feel this sense of normalcy and security.

My students attend a school in the New York area that was severely devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Our school is currently closed with no reopen date in sight. My 24 students are currently sharing their classroom with an additional 25 students from another class because we had to relocate to an already overcrowded school. These kids are resilient and strong, but they yearn for the normalcy they knew just a few weeks ago before the storm hit.

My Project

I am requesting several classroom supplies that I and my students can use until we are placed back into our own school. Our host school has been gracious and accepting, yet there is only so much they can do for us as far as supplies and materials are concerned. I am also requesting an Elmo Document Camera because we have a limited number of textbooks in this classroom and in order for all of the students to see the text, I will have to project it onto the board.

These supplies and this document camera will go a long way in creating a new normal for my third graders.

The children in my class have gone through so much in their young lives, watching their belongings thrown away and their moms and dads stressed to the limit. If we can just provide them with some sense of normalcy and structure during the school day, we are doing them a great service.
