This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When students struggle to learn, everything makes a difference, including the kind of table at which we ask them to work. Amid our wobbly desks, I dream of a beautiful, scholarly table at which I can gather my small groups of students for study and discussion.

Many of my urban New York students are still reeling from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy.

The majority of students live in the public housing that is located within the infamous Zone A. Months later, families are still waiting for repairs and trying to stabilize following the loss of income. More than ever, our middle school has felt like an oasis of calm and hope for stressed out students and their families. We have a strong advisory program and a core curriculum that meets the needs of diverse learners through an emphasis on the arts, self-expression, and academic rigor. My students, who range in age from 13 to 15, are an unbelievably tenacious and diverse group. I have students who emigrated from India, Guatemala, and China and regularly advocate and translate for their older family members. Many of my students dance: some with classical training, some with informal hip hop troupes, and some on the steps of our school building!

My Project

This solid table will serve as a permanent gathering place for the essential reading instruction that takes place every day in our 8th grade Humanities classroom. My co-teacher and I have 32 students, and we highly value the kind of small group opportunities that allow us to see students as individuals and assess their skills up close. We already have one of these tables, thanks to a previously funded project, but our large classroom will accommodate a second table. Given that we are two teachers, working and teaching side by side, this table would allow us to pull two reading groups simultaneously. Our students are always eager for the more focused instruction that small groups provide, and we use a rotating schedule to ensure that we meet with all of my students regularly. However, as it stands right now, we are constantly wasting precious time by pulling individual desks into temporary meeting areas.

Our students are working hard to improve their reading skills, and we want our classroom furniture to help us communicate that we respect them and their serious efforts.

We believe they deserve the kind of library quality table at which scholars gather to nurture their intellectualism.
