Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Why is it that people always gravitate towards the kitchen table? Help us build this same kind of "hearth," a central place of warmth and intellectual sharing in our own classroom. Amid our wobbly desks, I dream of a well crafted and sturdy table at which I can gather my small groups of students.

Many of my urban New York students are still reeling from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy.

The majority of students live in the public housing that is located within the infamous Zone A. Almost two months later, families are still waiting for repairs and trying to stabilize following the loss of income. More than ever, our middle school has felt like an oasis of calm and hope for stressed out students and their families. We have a strong advisory program and a core curriculum that meets the needs of diverse learners through an emphasis on the arts, self-expression, and academic rigor. My students, who range in age from 13 to 15, are an unbelievably tenacious and diverse group. I have students who emmigrated from India, Guatemala, and China and regularly advocate and translate for their older family members. Many of my students dance: some with classical training, some with informal hip hop troupes, some on the steps of our school building!

My Project

This solid table will serve as a permanent gathering place for the essential reading and discussion work and sharing that takes place every day in our 8th grade Humanities classroom. I have 32 students, and I highly value the kind of small group opportunities that allow me to see my students as individuals, engage their curiosity, and assess their skills up close. I have a large classroom space that would accommodate a library-style table, like this one. I imagine placing it in the very center of the room when I invite my students to work alongside me in various reading and discussion groups. My students are always eager for the more focused attention and instruction that small groups provide, and I use a rotating schedule to ensure that I meet with all of my students regularly. However, as it stands right now, we are constantly wasting precious time by pulling individual desks into temporary meeting areas--or using our laps as a table and sitting awkwardly on the floor!

An inviting and thoughtful classroom environment is essential to learning and teaching.

Classroom furniture is not simply about having a place to seat children; the furniture I choose as an educator reflects and supports my teaching philosophy. My classroom is missing the centerpiece that makes many houses a home: a table at which we can gather to learn and grow together.
