Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am proud to teach at an inner city school in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, my school has been affected by Hurricane Harvey. Our school was flooded severely, and we have been relocated to a year long temporary location. Most students live within walking distance of the damaged, school and now they have to ride a bus 25 minutes each way. Despite this setback, they are eager to come to school.

My school is almost totally English language learners who struggle to learn the English language.

Most of my students are from families which barely make ends meet. That does not leave room for any extras. That does not deter the students from making the most of what they do have, but they could definitely benefit from having more.

They are hardworking and thirst for knowledge. Their willingness to succeed will not be stifled by the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Learning must continue.

My Project

Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc at our school. We have been forced to move from our old building and have been in a temporary location since the September. My students are making the best of the situation, but they can definitely benefit from having tablets to help them access online apps for reading and writing.

Today's students are accustomed to being surrounded by technology.

School should not be any different. The tablets will provide the stimulation necessary and at the same time make learning fun. They will be able to use a variety of apps which appeal to all learning levels from beginner to native English speaker.

My ELL students work hard to learn the English language, and the tablets will be used in centers and in small groups. This will allow me to easily differentiate instruction to meet the various levels of my students. The use of technology will also keep their interest and hopefully make them even more eager to learn and be successful in my writing class.
