Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a low social-economical school in South-East Houston. My students are all minority students with 100% of the school’s population being on free and reduced lunch.

Hurricane Harvey recently hit our area hard and our gym/basketball equipment were both damaged.

With funding being reduced at my school this school year, I am trying to find a way to replace the basketball equipment that was lost.

Having our team equipment replaced at our school would help us have a successful basketball season. For most of my students, this will be their first time playing organized basketball in middle school. I am trying to prepare them for the next level by teaching them the importance of conditioning.

My Project

My project will make a difference in my students' lives because these are low social-economic student-athletes who are on free or reduced lunch that are less fortunate than the other local school districts. This project is important to the success that my athletes will encounter this season and upcoming seasons. We work extremely hard during the week in practice to be the best we can be for game day, but it’s hard without the proper equipment on campus. For them to learn and be prepared for the next level, this equipment, such as benches, basketballs, blocking pads, a basketball rack, a cooler, basketball nets, and ball bags, is needed in their foundation stage. I want all student-athletes to have the best middle school experience in Houston-ISD!
