Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It has been a national quest to educate and provide young students with the proper nutrition to grow strong and healthy bodies. It is as important that these same young children are provided with appropriate books to grow strong minds, and to develop a healthy interest, and a love for reading.

Ninety-eight percent of my kindergarten students have not had any preschool experience, nor have they had exposure to many age appropriate books for them to look at or read.

This is not uncommon for families living in our area of California, which is predominately low income families. Their curiosity about books and their content is obvious, as I see this when I read them a short story. However, their personal experience with books was never so obvious as when I asked them to bring their favorite book to class so that she/he could tell their classmates about it. Out of 27 students, only 5 children brought a book to class. Three of the books (all were leveled for advanced readers) were recently purchased, and the students admitted that the book had not been read to them. The other two books were also much too advanced for the children. Although the students had some idea about the content, each had difficulty retelling the story.

My Project

Even though I have taught for several years, this is my first year teaching kindergarten. The materials and equipment that I have accumulated over the past years are not appropriate for this age group. Therefore, I am starting from scratch. What I have been able to beg and borrow since my new assignment does not come close to meeting the definition of an adequately supplied and equipped room. I would like to fill my room with lots of age appropriate, leveled books for my students to explore; and to wet their appetite to a new world of words and pictures. Awakening their potential as learners leads to a heightened imagination, as well as sense of accomplishment as they learn to recognize familiar words. What follows is a belief that they to can achieve and do things in their life beyond what they may see or experience daily.

Feeding our children with nutritious food is only part of the equation.

Giving them books to hold, look at and read inspires within them an appetite for learning about a world that they may otherwise never know.
