Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For many students, high school is the easiest and best time of their lives. However, that is not always true for my students. For many, they are met with difficult challenges that prevent them from succeeding. Some students deal with lack of parental involvement, interrupted education, dangerous neighborhoods, gang violence, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy to name a few. My students come from traditional high schools where they got lost in the shuffle due to overcrowded classrooms. Many of them bring a feeling of defeat and hopelessness.

At my high school the students have a fresh start and a sense of positive possibilities.

We are a transfer high school for over-aged and under-credited students. It is a small school of about 250 students. Students have access to various support systems such as one-on-one counseling sessions, academic supports and open communication and expectations.

We are the Wolf Pack! As wolves we stick together as a community because there is strength in numbers. We are a family here. Because we recognize that traditional high school did not benefit our students, we create engaging lessons that interest our students.

My Project

My students have so much on their minds when they come to class. They have jobs, issues in their outside environment, sibling or children to care for. Often, their basic needs go overlooked.

When my students come to class, they have a hard time concentrating because they did not make it on time for breakfast, or had no money to get a snack.

As a teacher, I want my students to be their best selves. This sometimes requires me to have a snack or water bottle handy for students who really need it. Additionally, having snacks available to my students keep them in my class, there is no need to ask to go to get water from the fountain, or a snack from a peer. Snacks would mean my students come to class, get the incentive for working well, and feel better because they can concentrate on their work.
