My Students

I work in an 8:1:1 program in which all of my students are diagnosed as autistic. My students are high functioning with minimal behaviors. They LOVE pop culture, sports, animals, and reading. Since we are a smaller class they often have a hard time finding new books to read in my small library. They beg me for new books all the time, and when I come in with them- they read them right away! Autistic children are very easily distracted and it is difficult to keep engaged for extended periods of time. It’s essential that the books that they read in school captivate them and keep them on task and interested.

My Project

My students are avid readers who are desperate for new books. They are from low income neighborhoods and families and don’t always have access to books at home. The only place they get to read and “shop” for books is my classroom. I just want them to be able to go to my classroom library and be excited about the titles that they see. They also book shop and take these titles home to read with their parents. They’re always so excited to tell me about what their families thought of the stories and I’m always happy to hear about how these stories are connecting families.
