My Students

These students are full of life and have a desire for learning. I have never met students with more personality or tenacity. This school community has really changed my perspective on life in such a wonderful way. I have found joy in the little things because I have seen how they have joy in the little things despite some of their lifestyles. They are really a special group of students.

This group of children has really impressed upon my heart the need for family and a community that rallies behind them.

It has been so wonderful to see the support throughout the year, but it never seems like enough. I have seen children come to school with shoes three sizes too small because their parents can't afford new shoes. I have known children to go hungry over a weekend because their parents can barely afford to put food on the table. While the school staff, including me, has tried to meet the needs of these children, they are still in need of so much more!

My Project

It is well known that students who live in poverty sometimes have to go without the extras, but, unfortunately; students who live in poverty also sometimes go without the essentials. Many students come to school hungry and the only meals they get that day might be the ones provided at school. What does that mean for students over the weekend or over a long break?

Students are experiencing food insecurity at alarming rates and this project is just one small support for the students in my class with a variety of snacks as well as individual water bottles.

We have a snack every day mid-morning, and often I have students asking for some to take home. I want to be able to provide them with every possible support, and a basic need like food is somewhere I can start. They will be blown away by the variety of delicious snacks to choose from!

As a teacher, we must provide for the whole child, and if that means feeding them or getting them a warm jacket so they can focus on being successful at school; then that is just what I intend to do. I hope you can join me in supporting a project that will go a long way in filling hungry bellies at school and at home!
