My Students

Captivating my students is never easy, but with this novel, it will be! It engrossed me so quickly, I finished the trilogy in a few weeks! I want to give my students a new opportunity to become enriched by enlightening and rich literature that is relevant to their learning and experiences.

My students don't read enough.

Like typical 6th graders, they are more engrossed in video games, iPods, and the latest videos on Youtube. My students, because of their neighborhood and community challenges, don't find many opportunities to immerse themselves in reading or study. It's been difficult to find literature that will engage them as well as challenge their thinking in a way to get them to do more than just read a novel, but use the novel as a catalyst to doing more for themselves.

My Project

This book offers the PERFECT opportunity. The Hunger Games is a novel full of deep meaning, hidden messages, and complex themes laid out in a sea of suspense, drama, history, and illusion. Students will have the opportunity to read and deliberate difficult ideas surrounding the treatment of the "working class" or "the poor" in a society run by the privileged. They will experience a sense of outrage as the characters are unjustly thrown into a game that offers only one outcome--win or die. I have no doubt that my students will be completely engaged and "hungry" (pun intended!) to read the next two books in the trilogy.

This project, more than just giving my students a terrific piece of literature to read gives them a chance to REALLY understand how a book can change a person.

I feel that the themes of the book (injustice, suppression, rebellion) are things that they can relate to in a positive way. I am hoping that after they read the trilogy, they can apply the understanding to life--learning valuable lessons from what they read, but most importantly, the lesson that reading can impact lives.
