I teach high school science in a high needs urban area. Our school is a charter school that works at building a strong sense of community with our students. We design our curriculum to include authentic learning experiences and integrated curriculum.

The recent economic situation has caused our state to freeze the operating funds for charter schools, causing a giant obstacle for providing our students with hands-on materials for science class.

The supplies I'm requesting would be used to run a twelve week nutrition elective for juniors and seniors that are interested in learning more about good nutrition choices, their health and wellness and possible applicable career fields connected to nutrition. While teaching a biology course at our school I realized how little they understand about nutrition and how interested they are in learning more. Many students make poor food choices based on this lack of knowledge. This class will not only serve as an introduction to the careers connected to the food industry and nutritional science, but help our students in their daily lives. The hands on laboratory experience would make the class much more meaningful for my students.

Your help will make it possible for my students to be part a very meaningful laboratory science elective. Without your support I will be forced to teach the elective in a much more traditional lecture and notes format. Without the applied laboratory work it is very difficult for high school students to envision the different career paths that they are contemplating
