My Students

Our classroom is an open and inviting environment designed to foster independent student learning. My students are thirsty for new materials to continue their education.

I teach in a public urban multi-age Montessori school with 65 first through sixth-grade students.

My students learn through small group and individual lessons, research and inquiry, and by going out into our community. My students come from all different backgrounds, racially and socioeconomically, and live in an urban setting. My co-teacher and I are piloting a combined Montessori 1st-6th grade classroom.

My students are involved in social justice and environmental conscious movements, taking a stand and trying to better the world. Our students work hard with the resources they have to follow their passions and find meaning in their education. In case you are wondering... I have the greatest students in the history of the world.

My Project

Children love to study the world around them.

One of the cornerstones of the Montessori curriculum is learning about the fundamental needs of humans.

In our classroom we study shelter, nutrition, communication, defense, religion & philosophy, clothing, arts, and transportation. We use these eight needs to study six different time periods throughout history. Students are able to compare and contrast one need throughout multiple time periods, and then complete a deeper study of each time period through the lens of these needs.

We discuss how technology and globalization have impacted each over time, and look at current or future trends and issues.

I love how this work gets kids thinking about how their needs are met and their place both in the world today and in history!

The books in this project will help us further our study of the fundamental needs of humans.
