Help me give my students a break from screens for some hands-on learning! Crayons, markers, colored pencils, and dry-erase boards will allow us to create maps and collaborate as a classroom without a tech interface.

My Project
My students are inspirations: highly-motivated, creative, and hilarious. As a social studies teacher, my goal is to promote a culture of curiosity and civic engagement, where my students can approach social and historical contexts as problem-solvers and agents of inquiry and change. Ambitious as these goals may seem, they have developed over time because my students have either implicitly or explicitly commanded such high expectations.
As my wonderful colleagues do everything within their power to help our students be prepared for the competitive global marketplace, we are all working with limited resources.
In a state where almost 70% of public education funding is generated from local taxes, my students fundamentally are denied the equity and access that many credentialed and respected organizations espouse. Considering what they have accomplished given these uphill battles, think about what they can do on a level playing field.
Remote learning has left us feeling disconnected, with computers and phones mediating all of our interactions. The school supplies--colored pencils, markers, crayons, and dry-erase boards--will help us break free from the screen so we can create maps and participate in collaborative learning activities with materials versus tracking pads.
