Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help bring science to life in the classroom. Provide the human body models that can assist better learning.

Our students are mostly Latinos and African Americans who attend an inner city charter school.

They are in the 7th grade where majority of them qualifies for free or reduce school lunch. Students are motivated to strive for higher education and live by integrity. They understand that nothing is handed to them on a silver platter and their work ethics reflects the grade they receive.

My Project

My students are tactile and visual learners who require different modalities to maintain their interest. The human body models will give them insight of how their own body functions. This will give them an "x-ray vision" of all the different layers. The skeletal models give them visual of how it works and assist them on their bone song/poem assignment. As they create their lyrics, they can see and touch how each part affects the other. The pellets also support student learning by identify the different bone structures. Students can also make observations on the bones and compare the similarities between humans and other organisms. This can also lead to the discussion of evolution and connection of certain organisms. The joint models is a great demonstration of how the skeletal muscles works and how they can create a similar model using own model using sticks and rubber bands. The models help clarify any misconceptions regarding the bone, joints, and tendon movements.

The human body models will have a great impact on students by helping them scaffold difficult concepts that seem abstract.

These structures simulate learning by helping them see the invisible visible. As they tackle a familiar territory of their bodies, they can unveil uncertainty of the inner parts.
