Hugs for Autism

My students need sensory items like a hug machine to help them process stress, and they need an Ipad to help them communicate and learn in a fun way.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. All of my students have been diagnosed with autism. They all love to learn and communicate in different ways.

My students love to use technology, and it has been proven to help them grow academically.

They love books and many of them are learning to read using audiobooks and phonics.

Many of my students live in shelters or temporary housing facilities. Add in their disability, and life for my students is much more complicated than a typical student their age. However, I like to focus on the possible in my classroom. We all work together to have a great day. We share, we compliment each other on a job well done, and we have developed a classroom community that feels like a family.

My Project

My students are in grades 3-5 and all have severe autism.

People with autism often suffer from sensory processing disorders- in terms of touch they either feel too much or too little.

Many of my students like to bang, bump and move so they constantly feel. Sensory toys help my students to sit more comfortably by giving them the ability to better process the world around them in a way they understand.

Temple Grandin, a well-known and successful autistic woman, invented something known as the hug machine. Simply, this machine hugs children and gives them the deep pressure they seek out. This machine would be such a benefit in my classroom, as it would help students relax and be calmer by giving them the input their bodies are looking for in a safe, appropriate manner.

Lastly, an iPad has become such an essential part of a classroom, but most especially for students who are unable to communicate. I can use the iPad to create interactive books that help my students learn to read, as well as communicate simple wants and needs. Children are able to use an iPad to type responses to questions and push picture buttons that will communicate what they require- simple things like going to the bathroom, being thirsty and needing a glass of water. Something as simple as this communication can go a long way in opening a window into an autistic child's world and encouraging them to continue to socialize with others.
