Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings, I teach US History and Government to 11th graders. I teach in a high-need community. Our HS was broken into 4 smaller schools and our graduate rates have increased but still need more support.

My students are future urban planners as long as they continue to question history. I tell them if they continue to apply historical inquiry and listen to all perspectives on all the events in US History they will have a better understanding of the important turning points. One important book my students feel is inspiring and is a great example of the research they want to conduct in April is Howard Zinn's the People's History of the U.S. They also feel this book can help them prepare for the US History State Regents Exam in June 2008.

If I can obtain a class set of Howard Zinn's work it would serve as great resource for my students to really understand the other side of the story. Examples so far we used has been the side of slaves during the abolitionist movements and the stories on how Cherokee Indians died in the Trail of Tears. These stories are not detailed in public school textbooks and many voices are never heard. With this book, I can focus on reading and free writing. Students can question the book as well and conduct additional research for themselves.

As a donor, you will make it possible for my students to explore US history through the lens of many affected by the turning points. You are providing our students the opportunity to learn about how the Bill of Rights affected African Slaves; how the American Revolution was successful with the help of the French and Spain; how Native Americans inspired our government through their pact of 5 nations; how unions faced military forces and how the Watergate scandal played out in allowing the people to question government actions. You are donating to many years of learning. These books will be used for years to come and will help contribute to our students' research symposium conducted annually.
