My Students

Have you ever wondered about something and didn't know how to go about to find the answer? Well, this is the case for many young learners, but you and I can change this by immersing my students in nonfiction books that will spark their curiosity and help them find answers about the Polar Region!

My students come from ethnically diverse backgrounds and attend a public school in an urban setting.

They love reading books and working together to learn more about a topic. Additionally, they are active thinkers who are constantly wondering about the world around them and they love sharing their curiosity and new learning with one another.

My Project

One of my many goals this year is to help my students become effective researchers, which will, in turn, help our science topics develop in to meaningful and engaging inquiries. My students and I will be studying the Polar Region this year and I want them to be able to utilize a variety of resources throughout our inquiry study, such as nonfiction books and the Internet to answer the questions they generate. I want them to be able to make meaning of what they read and discuss their wondering and thinking with one another in a meaningful and purposeful way. By immersing my students in rich nonfiction books like Hiding in the Polar Regions, Life in a Polar Region and A Polar Bear Can Swim, students will have the opportunity to develop the research skills needed to move through an inquiry study. In addition, we will be learning about the nonfiction text features and comprehension strategies that help good readers understand nonfiction text. These skills will help my students become good readers of nonfiction text, which is key when they move on to the upper grades!

The high interest nonfiction books and globe will allow my students to work in their research groups to learn about the Polar Region and find answers to their questions.

Most importantly, they will have access to informational text that will help them develop the skills needed to tackle this genre and make meaning of what they read.
