This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work as a speech provider in a Title I-funded school in NY, where most students are from lower-income, immigrant, single-parent, or grandparent households. They come from many backgrounds and speak many languages. All my students are language-delayed and qualify for Special Education services.
Teaching kids with disabilities requires a lot of love, patience, and enthusiasm.
Like any other children, they want to succeed, but the learning does not come easily for my kids. Their living or learning situations are not ideal. The comfort, structure, and predictability of traditional classroom instruction are gone. My students keep showing up in my in-person or virtual classroom with smiles, happy to see their friends, ready to learn together and be kids.
My Project
We worked so hard for the past few months trying to learn new things and catch up on the skills that we lost while learning online. Our days are filled with listening to books, answering questions, telling stories, learning "fancy" words, and making crafts! My kids need help to learn academic skills, and I need to introduce all the concepts very slowly to address their different levels, skills, abilities, and learning styles. We learn together as a family.
My students love listening to books and don't mind "working on a book".
"How to Catch a Snowman" would be a great book to start the new year! My students would greatly benefit from new engaging winter books and hands-on, visually appealing, and developmentally appropriate materials. My kids would enjoy making and decorating their snowman. There are a variety of social emotional lessons based on books that will help my students learn and grow. Being successful will improve their overall confidence, well-being, and mental health. Plastic tubs will keep our materials tidy and clean.
