Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky to be teaching a bioethics course where students are examining topical and potentially controversial issues in the sciences. My students are passionate and motivated and strive for more hands-on experiences. They're awesome and I want to provide them more hands-on opportunities.

I work at a small, Title One school of just two hundred kids.

(Title I means a high percentages of children from low-income families). This small size helps create a safe, open environment but it often means we lack the opportunities that larger or better funded schools have. Most of our students come from the South Bronx and Harlem and commute forty-five minutes to well over an hour to come to our school. The students care greatly for their community and their empathy has led me to develop an elective bioethics course for students to explore biology issues they find meaningful. They want materials to do real science which is wonderful, but not so easy with our limited finances.

My Project

The activity will be guided around the bioethical question, 'Are we providing the citizens of New York safe healthy drinking water?' Students will learn about the factors that affect water quality. Students will measure the chemical components of various water samples. Students will use water quality measurement data as evidence to support an action position. We will test the water at two locations in our school as well as, at five of the different housing projects that our students live in to measure if the water is safe to drink. We are studying the crisis in Flint and my class aims to connect social issues with hard scientific analysis so students can be informed citizens. Students will learn how to do measure and collect data in a real world setting just like real environmental scientists do.

I am really excited for them to have this opportunity to do hands-on science that affects their daily lives.

This project supports students knowing they are provided healthy drinking water and to choose that over spending their money on bottle water or drinks. Alternatively, if they find their water is unhealthy, we will be informed citizens ready to take action with our evidence. By donating to this project, you are empowering students to be stewards of change in their communities.
