My Students

Our elementary school is one of the oldest schools in Florence One but you would never know it. In addition to innovative programs, a hard working staff, and a group of students that are academically and socially top notch, students and staff demonstrate good character in every way, every day.

Our school works hard to integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and math or STEAM.

This focus engages students in activities that integrate multiple learning opportunities while requiring problem solving and collaboration. There is a school wide focus on on-going, weekly activities that engage students in this type of critical thinking thereby better preparing them for beyond the classroom.

Our fourth grade students enjoy a challenge and the "STEAM" activities they engage in are designed to do just that.

My Project

Students will investigate the growth of plants by applying measurement and observation skills. They will analyze the effects of various parameters such as temperature and moisture levels on the growth rate of plants while also learning the best environment for plant growth.

Students will apply inquiry skills such as observation, data collection and hypothesizing to find the best environment for sustained growth of plant life.

Students will sort various types of seeds, weigh them, and plant them to identify seeds that grow best. Students will specifically use sunflower plants and gather data to include moisture levels and growth throughout the study. Student will use a variety of science tools such as graduated cylinders and scales to weigh seeds and plants, and measure water supplied to plants. The moisture meter will allow students to evaluate the need for water as well as the effects of overwatering. Each student will be able to grow their own samples, one to show seed comparison and one to show the effects of moisture on growth.

Students will be able to apply these skills outside the classroom to grow their own plants including edible ones that could offer healthier dietary choices for their families.
