My Students

It is difficult for students to understand how water gets to the top of tall plants or trees unless they actually see it for themselves and actually take part in measuring the rate of transpiration.

The students in our district come from a rural area in which 75% are economically disadvantaged.

The 5th and 6th graders that I teach are always excited to come to science class and are always wanting to know "What are we going to do today?" They love to experiment. In the past I have discovered that hands-on learning helps when the topic is difficult for them to understand and transpiration is one of those topics. Cohesion and root pressure are a few things discussed in this lesson. The potometers will help students understand the process of transpiration in plants.

My Project

By using these potometers, students will see that water travels up the tallest tree from a variety of processes like cohesion, root pressure, and transpiration. Students will observe and measure the rate of transpiration in a variety of short and tall plants. In the end, students will understand that plants receive water from the ground and not through water droplets on the leaves.

Donations to this project will help students by giving them a chance to understand how water actually moves through plants and trees.

This lesson will help students understand how pesticides can end up in a plant's leaves, or can help them decide where to plant a something that will require a lot of water to survive.
