Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a high school science teacher in New York City. I teach the special education students as well as the science research students.

As many of you know, there is now a push to have learning be more hands-on for students. No longer are they expected to sit in a classroom and copy information that is passed on to them from their teachers. They are to actively participate in the learning process, discovering for themselves those concepts which were previously simply stated for them. This type of environment can be challenging and rewarding for both the teacher and students alike. It also makes the process of learning much more exciting and relevant than it has ever been in the past. Unfortunately, it is also much more expensive. And as you may also know, there is no money to buy the supplies needed to make these experiences happen as often as we would like or as meaningful as they could be.

This proposal is asking for supplies to help the students understand the excretory system, the ways in which the body releases its waste products. In addition to two models, one of the kidney and one of the lungs, I would like to use three separate class activities to demonstrate how the kidneys function. In the first activity, students will use tubing to simulate the kidneys function and clean simulated blood. The second activity will be a urinalysis, allowing students to detect the components of simulated urine. The final activity will allow student to test blood samples for glucose – helping to diagnose a patient with diabetes. I would use these materials for years to come.

With these types of activities, the students will be able to see with their own eyes how their own blood is cleaned and how doctors can use this knowledge when diagnosing their patients. All I need is your help. You have it within your power to help create a learning environment that in which students are excited about learning. With your help we can give my students the opportunity to experience science instead of simply having it told to them.
