Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of second and third grade special needs students in the Bronx, NY. It's a self-contained bridge classroom with 12 students, 1 teacher, and 1 paraprofessional. My students face a lot of challenges both academically and in their personal life as well. It is essential that students not only excel academically but also gain the appropriate social and real-world skills that will facilitate their college and career readiness from an early age.

Jim Henson said, "Kids don't remember what you try to teach them, they remember what you are."

It is my goal to create a safe, warm, and kind community in my classroom. I strive to facilitate socio-emotional student learning by placing an emphasis on building my students' character as well as their skill sets.

My Project

Biophilia is a term coined by researchers that describes an innate drive within all humans to connect with their environment. However, in order for this affinity to nature to develop, one must seek out activities that foster this connection. Due to the increased importance placed on technology over recent decades, many people have developed feelings in the opposite direction. As a society, we have created a world which values the mechanical and ‘non alive’ at the expenditure of nature. Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD) refers to the growing disconnectedness children are feeling towards nature. This occurs within children who spend little to no time outdoors interacting with the natural environment, and therefore lack an emotional connection to the natural world.

The effects of Nature Deficit Disorder can be both physiological as well as social/emotional, and can have a negative impact on the way young people perceive and treat nature.

In order to combat this growing attitude, people need the opportunity to connect more with their natural environment – to see the important purpose that it serves for our survival. Daily contact with nature, especially with younger children, has been identified as an essential component to facilitate this connection.

The goal of this project is to foster positive attitudes towards the natural world in students with disabilities who live in an urban community by providing them with more direct experiences with nature.
