How Does a Nurse Log Help Things Live and Grow?

Help me give my students experiences with authentic science investigations about ecosystems and matter cycling using living things and rotting log kits.

My Project

I discovered a fifth grade science unit that will motivate my students to learn the skills of science investigation, data analysis, and communication, along with the ideas of ecosystems and matter cycling. This project is to fulfill the materials to teach a unit from Open SciEd. The unit has a storyline that appeals to fifth grade curiosity. Also, one of the partners of Open SciEd is BSCS Science Learning. This organization has been my guiding light in research-based, inquiry-based science instruction due to their focus on student thinking and authentic experiences for students to explore and connect ideas.

My students are curious and are very committed to learning more in science when the learning is authentic, concise, and connected to their lives.

The materials I am hoping to acquire through this project will give my students this opportunity. Also, the unit connects us to the outdoors. We will be able to go outside to explore the woods and rotting logs surrounding our school. I am beyond excited to get started piloting for myself this unit. I plan on figuring out ways to maintain and reuse the living components of this unit in future years, so the materials will be cheaper after this year.
