My Students

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. That's why it is imperative that our students' first experience in school be one that not only prepares them, but one that keeps them excited to learn. In our Pre-K classroom we see every day as an opportunity to link our classroom experiences to the wonders of the world.

Through play based learning, small group/individual learning experiences, and guided literacy, my students are building the social and academic skills that will prepare them for Kindergarten and beyond.

Fostering curiosity, exploration, and a sense of community togetherness; while developing a lifelong love of learning...that is what Pre-K is about! And through the NC-PreK program, I am privileged to serve a community of children who need high quality Pre-K experiences the most. Our students are bright, creative, and hunger for the chance to demonstrate what they know. And in spite of the risk factors that make them eligible for our program, they break through statistics and stereotypes with every new challenge they face!

My Project

Building a forever love of literacy starts at the beginning. The students in my Pre-K class are encouraged to read and write throughout the day using the literacy skills they are developing. In my classroom we have begun a book unit; learning about their parts, retelling our favorite stories, discovering the different forms of printed media and becoming authors and illustrators. My students are thriving in this lesson; asking for more opportunities to write, demonstrating pride in their work by hanging it in the classroom, reading their class-made books, and wanting to involve their parents in their work.

A trip to see one of our favorite author's works performed in a play will help my Pre-K students further connect literature to their world!

This project will cover the admission fee so my students can see a live performance of Dr. Seuss' Go Dog Go. We would love your help in building a strong literary foundation that will empower our students to develop literacy skills with confidence and enthusiasm.
